Visualisers

A visualiser (also called a document camera) turns any surface into a shared classroom canvas — modelling handwriting, marking pupil work live, sharing a specimen, or projecting a page from a book so every child can see it at once. Used well, it changes how teachers demonstrate, how pupils critique each other's work, and how much thinking gets made visible in a lesson.

A visualiser sits above a desk or tabletop and streams a live video feed to the class board or projector. Where an interactive whiteboard forces you to prepare content ahead of time, a visualiser is a spontaneous tool — pick up a pupil's exercise book, drop it under the camera, and the whole class is looking at it in seconds. That immediacy is why visualisers have quietly become one of the most-used items of classroom kit in UK schools over the last decade, particularly in primary settings and secondary English, maths and science.

The strongest classroom uses are almost always tied to live modelling: writing a paragraph and thinking aloud as you shape a sentence; solving a maths problem step by step with pupils watching every choice; or examining a shared text and annotating it in real time. Visualisers also lend themselves to sharing pupil work — with permission, holding up a piece of writing or a maths answer for the class to critique. Handled well, this normalises the idea that drafts get better through public feedback.

The pitfalls are worth knowing too. A visualiser can turn a lesson into a lecture if the teacher is always the one under the camera. The best practitioners hand it over — inviting pupils to solve, annotate, or explain their thinking from the front, with the camera doing the amplification.

Practical uses across the curriculum

  • English: Live modelling of a sentence or paragraph; shared editing of a pupil's draft; annotating a poem or extract.
  • Maths: Working a calculation step by step; showing multiple pupil approaches to the same problem side by side.
  • Science: Displaying a specimen, a dissection, a small-scale demonstration, or a measurement being read from apparatus.
  • Art & DT: Demonstrating a technique — brush strokes, folding, cutting, joining — from the teacher's hand rather than a video.
  • Modern languages: Displaying vocabulary flashcards, a pupil's written work, or a text extract for translation.
  • Assessment for Learning: Displaying a whole-class critique of one anonymous pupil's answer; comparing two responses to identify what makes one stronger.

  • When you demonstrate under a visualiser, whose voice is in the room — yours, or a pupil's? Which do you want it to be more often?
  • How could you use a visualiser to make thinking visible rather than just work visible?
  • What routines does your class need so that pupils are willing to have their work shown and discussed?

Try this in your classroom

  • Pick one lesson this week and plan a five-minute live-modelling segment under the visualiser: solve a problem or write a paragraph, thinking aloud.
  • Ask a pupil to solve a problem from the front, under the camera. You facilitate, they think.
  • Photograph three anonymous responses to the same question, project them, and get the class to rank them from strongest to weakest — explaining why.
