Banging chemistry: fast and furious

The dramatic chemistry demonstrations — thermite, sodium in water, elephant's toothpaste, methane bubbles — are memorable and controversial in equal measure. Handled well, they build engagement and teach real chemistry. Handled badly, they're pyrotechnics that leave pupils remembering the bang and forgetting the equation.

Every experienced chemistry teacher has views on the dramatic demonstration. In one camp: these are the moments pupils remember decades later, the sparks that ignite genuine interest, the shared experiences that give a class its identity. In the other camp: they're entertainment, not education; pupils remember the flash but not the chemistry; and there are safer, more instructive alternatives.

The evidence-informed middle ground is that dramatic demos can teach real chemistry if they're framed properly. The framing matters more than the drama. A methane bubble ignited without any prior discussion is a firework. A methane bubble ignited after pupils have predicted the reaction, discussed the combustion equation, and thought about what will happen to the resulting energy is a chemistry lesson with a memorable pivot moment.

The safety point is non-trivial and increasingly important. CLEAPSS guidance covers what can and cannot be done in UK school labs, and the boundaries have tightened over the last two decades. Some classic demos (large-scale thermite reactions, working with elemental potassium in more than trace amounts) are now more restricted. The best demonstrators know what's currently permissible and design their spectacle within those limits.

A framing that turns spectacle into teaching

  1. Predict. Show the reagents and equipment. Ask pupils to write what they think will happen and why, before you do anything.
  2. Perform, deliberately. Slow down at the pivot moment. Draw pupils' attention to what they should notice.
  3. Explain. Work through the underlying chemistry — balanced equation, energy change, particle-level story.
  4. Extend. Give a related but unfamiliar reaction to reason about. Can pupils now predict something they haven't seen?
  5. Debrief. A quick exit ticket: "in one sentence, what happened chemically and why?"

  • Which of your favourite dramatic demos is genuinely teaching chemistry, and which is mostly spectacle you've grown attached to?
  • How do you handle the pupils who leave the lesson remembering the bang but not the equation? What structural change could shift that?
  • What does current CLEAPSS guidance allow that pupils would find memorable but that doesn't require heroic risk-taking?

Try this in your classroom

  • For your next spectacular demo, add a pre-demo prediction step and a post-demo exit ticket. Compare pupil retention to demos you've run without those bookends.
  • Ask pupils to draw the particle-level story of one dramatic reaction. Their diagrams tell you whether the chemistry landed or just the theatre.
  • Check current CLEAPSS guidance for the demonstration you're planning. Adjust if the guidance has changed since you last ran it.
