KS2 Maths – Geometry[Youtube]

Geometry in KS2 covers shape, space, position and measurement — a wider set of ideas than pupils sometimes realise. Taught well it develops spatial reasoning, precise vocabulary, and the visual thinking that supports algebra and problem-solving in later years.

The KS2 geometry curriculum introduces properties of 2D and 3D shapes, angles, coordinates, translations and reflections, and the vocabulary that goes with each. It builds on the more informal shape work of KS1 and prepares pupils for the deductive geometry that arrives at KS3 and KS4. Where teaching goes wrong, it tends to be too heavily focused on naming shapes rather than reasoning about them.

The most productive geometry teaching tends to be manipulative-rich. Pupils fold, cut, construct, measure and draw. They notice properties by comparing shapes, not by memorising definitions. They use precise vocabulary because they have to describe what they see. A lesson where pupils construct a quadrilateral with specific properties from strips and split-pins teaches more than a worksheet of "name this shape" ever will.

The parallel push is on reasoning. "Always, sometimes, never" prompts ("A rectangle is always a parallelogram — true, sometimes, or never?") force pupils to articulate what they know and test it. Convince-me tasks ("How do you know all rectangles have four right angles?") push them beyond noticing to justifying. This is the seed of the deductive reasoning that will bloom into secondary geometry.

Geometry moves that develop real understanding

  • Manipulate real shapes. Fold paper, cut card, construct with strips, build with cubes. Concrete before abstract.
  • Precise vocabulary. "Two parallel sides" beats "long straight bits at the top and bottom". Insist on the language pupils will need at KS3.
  • Compare and contrast. What's the same about a square and a rhombus? What's different? Comparison sharpens noticing.
  • Reasoning prompts. "Always, sometimes, never." "How do you know?" "Convince me." Reasoning is the point, not the shape names.
  • Cross-curricular connections. Symmetry in art, angles in DT, coordinates in geography. Geometry appears everywhere.

  • Which geometry vocabulary do your pupils most reliably confuse (perimeter/area, parallel/perpendicular, radius/diameter)? What's helped?
  • When did you last set a geometry task with no single right answer? What kind of thinking did it produce?
  • How does your geometry teaching connect to number and measurement — or is it treated as a separate strand?

Try this in your classroom

  • Give pupils split pins and strips of card. Ask them to make quadrilaterals with specific properties. What do they discover?
  • Try one "always, sometimes, never" prompt at the start of your next geometry lesson. Discuss the answers before doing anything else.
  • Ask pupils to design a treasure hunt using coordinates. They swap with a partner and try to follow each other's directions. Precise coordinates matter now.
